The zero waste message is one that’s drummed into us on a daily basis right now and we’re lucky if we can go a day without coming across doom-laden headlines about climate change and the impact that human activity is having on the planet.
But you know what they say – worrying is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but it doesn’t get you anywhere… so, if you’re keen to start living as sustainably as possible to help reduce your personal environmental impact, why not start with your cocktail-drinking habits?
Thinking sustainably where cocktails are concerned is all about using your ingredients to their fullest. Instead of binning that lime you’ve just juiced, for example, why not see if you can use the rest of it in a drink somewhere? You could use this, or any other leftover fruits, to infuse spirits and syrups as a sustainable solution to the waste problem.
If you have the time, you could even go so far as to peel your citrus fruit before you juice them, so you can use the peel for garnish, infusions and dehydration. Another way to reduce your waste!
And, of course, we all like to sip our cocktails through a straw but these are a massive problem where waste is concerned, so swap the plastic for something like bamboo or go really avant-garde with a cinnamon stick as a straw instead.
We’d love to hear what ideas you have for your own sustainable cocktails… so get in touch with the team here at Clapham Junction wine bar Adventure Bar to tell us what you have in mind.
